Natural Remedies for Addiction :: 25+ Ideas, Herbs, & Essential Oils To Help You Quit Smoking

Natural Remedies to Help You Quit Smoking and Start Living Addiction Free

Despite all our attempts at healthy living — i.e. subscribing to a nutrient dense diet and exercise — an addiction can get in the way of ultimate wellbeing.

Smoking, because of the nicotine found in cigarettes, is extremely addictive.

You see, nicotine acts in one of two ways:

Stimulant
Nicotine works to stimulate three primarily body systems.

  • Central Nervous System
  • Cardiovascular System
  • Digestive System

Sedative
For some folks – smoking settles nerves and bring calm.

Whichever the action, and secondary sensation experienced, smoking is a very difficult habit to kick.

Difficult…not impossible.

Although there are no easy ways to stop smoking, there are a multitude of natural remedies to help you quit that you can try that are not nicotine-based – like the most common mainstream, pharmaceutical nicotine replacement treatments.

To quit smoking naturally, all you have to do is educate yourself on the gifts available to help you quit smoking naturally. And of course, be determined to liberate yourself from the throes of nicotine addiction.

Ideas To Help You Quit

  1. Make a list. Write down all motivating reasons that brought you to the decision to quit. Post it somewhere as a constant reminder.
  2. Set a date. Having a goal – this could be weeks or months into the future — will allow you to stay focused and committed.
  3. Change it up. Switch to a brand of cigarettes that you don’t like.
  4.  Just stop. Don’t stop smoking cold turkey, but maybe set guidelines for yourself. Agree to stop smoking during certain hours of the day and gradually increase this time period. Soon enough, there won’t be any time left for a smoke.
  5. Make another list. This time, write down things that make you happy, joyful, and calm. When the temptation comes — choose these activities instead of smoking.
  6. Crafty you. Learn a new craft or skill…something that requires the use of your hands (i.e. knitting, drawing/sketching, cooking, crocheting, sewing, gardening…). I highly recommend learning new skills by taking a few online classes with Craftsy!
  7. Save your money. In a tucked away corner of your living space, place a jar. Fill it with the money you save from buying less cigarettes. You’ll be amazed!

Herbs To Help You Quit

  • Lobelia – contains the alkaloid lobeline, which acts as a temporary replacement for nicotine — satisfying the body’s craving.
  • Passion Flower & Oat straw – help to calm and nourish the nervous system, which will help with the irritability experienced during withdrawal.
  • Mullein — a plant smoked traditionally by Native Americans for lung healing (protecting against inflammation of the respiratory tract) and ceremonial purposes. (Try smoking this non-toxic, non-nicotine herb instead of tobacco by rolling its leaves in cigarette papers or via pipe. Purchase organic mullein leaf here…)
  • Ginger root – aids in restoring health and function to the digestive system and relieves nausea often associated with nicotine withdrawal (Chewing on pieces of fresh ginger root or candied ginger can help curb cravings. So can sucking on a whole clove.)
  • Skullcap – used effectively in the treatment of an overactive nervous system (most effective in relieving tension and anxiety).
  • Eleuthero Root — helps to build the immune system and supports the body during stressful times.
  • Echinacea Root & Garlic – both increase the lungs’ resistance to infection and disease. (Purchase the best whole Echinacea Tincture here. Or make this immunity powerhouse — Hot Echinacea Tincture — with my easy to follow recipe.)

Detox herbs such as those found in this detox tea are also vital in supporting the body’s transition away from the toxic effects of nicotine.

Several different preparations of the herbs listed above can be created at home or purchased. Look for teas, extracts, tinctures, or capsules. Use them whenever you have the desire smoke, up to six times a day.

The Benefits of Lavender Oil are Endless!

The benefits of Lavender oil are endless. It is one of the most versatile oils in nature. The fragrance is very relaxing and calming to the body and mind. That is why it is one of my favorite oils and is a “must have” for the home or barn!

By Lavender Oil Here!

I like to use a very special lavender grown in St. Maries Idaho. Yes, you will still get the same great benefits of lavender oil; but this carefully harvested crop has the potential of being the best that lavender oil can be!

Because it is very nurtured and taken care of, it can be compared to a reserve wine or a aged Anejo Rum. I love its deep rich aroma and I promise you will be drawn to it immediately! The animals are drawn to this oil over the french lavender oil!

My favorite essential oil blends that contain lavender are Brain Power and Gentle Baby. Gentle Baby is safe enough to use during pregnancy and can be used on infants! It will help you minimize stress before, during and after delivery! Better put it on Dad too!

I designed this section so you could use it as a fun and easy reference guide. It will tell you how to use your oil and what to use it for. It will also provide you with some fun tips, testimonials and oil trivia!

As I receive new tips and testimonials on the benefits of lavender oil they will be added to the page, so check back often!

On the July 11, 2008, episode of NBC’s Today show, Dr. Susan Wagner, an animal neurologist, along with animal behaviorist Dr. Terry Curtis promoted the use of essential oils.

During the Today’s Pets segment, Dr. Wagner addressed the fear issues of several dogs including Bailey, a Labrador mix, who is afraid of water. Dr. Wagner suggested the use of Lavender essential oil as a treatment option for Bailey’s phobia, and explained that, “When we talk about essential oils, we’re not talking about fragrances that you buy at a bath and beauty store—these are therapeutic—grade essential oils, and lavender is one of the most calming plants.

So we can take a couple drops of oil and put it on a piece of clothing next to Bailey or even one drop and rub it between the hands and rub it down the back and it has an amazing calming effect.”

Pets can also reap the benefits of Lavender oil!

Coffee Salt Scrub

Coffee Salt ScrubLooking at spa website’s make my back ache (in need of a good rub), especially when you’re supposed to be writing a recipe not looking at spa treatments you can’t afford. My favorite thing to do is look at spa websites, something about them are so calming and soothing. Coffee Salt Scrub Coffee Salt Scrub
Being pampered is a dream come true for almost everyone, but at a spa it can be so expensive so let’s just turn are bath tubs into mini spa’s from time to time. Having a little me time is so important even if it’s just five minutes. No matter where in the world you are, take some time for yourself to smell some essential oils and just breathe. I can hear you saying “that’s not possible” so next time you’re in the shower or tub, stay a few extra minutes to smell your soap ( make sure it smells good) and just breathe. Coffee Salt Scrub Coffee Salt Scrub

Salt scrubs are defiantly a luxury at a spa and can cost a pretty penny especially when coffee grounds are involved. The Great thing about most spa scrubs you can make them at home; they will cost a fraction of what you would have spent on a jar of scrub online or at a spa.Coffee Salt Scrub

Coffee Salt Scrub Recipe:
1 ½ cup coarse sea salt
1 cup coffee grounds (dried)
1 cup oil (I used coconut)
5-15 drops of essential oils (I used lemon)

Recipe Directions: In a large bowl add coarse sea salt and coffee grounds and stir; place oil and essential oils into bowl and stir.  Store in air tight jar and use for those days when you need to need a good scrubbing.
